Allendale Columbia School is pleased to announce Nancy Northup ’77 as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2017.
Established in 2009 to honor alumni for their outstanding achievements and contributions to both Allendale Columbia School and their local community, the AC Alumni Board is proud to recognize Nancy as an alumna who has made a regional, national, and international impact while also serving as a role model for young people around the world. As one nomination letter stated, “Nancy is a credit to AC, but, more importantly, she is someone who young people can look up to and see that one person can indeed make a difference in people’s lives.”
Nancy Northup became President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights in 2003. Under Ms. Northup’s leadership, the Center’s game changing litigation work—combined with its unparalleled expertise in the use of constitutional, international, and comparative human rights law—have transformed how reproductive rights are understood by courts, governments, and human rights bodies. She has led the organization’s exceptional growth: tripling its operating budget over the course of a decade, opening four overseas offices, conceiving and implementing its strategic focus on ensuring reproductive health and freedom as a fundamental human right, and establishing the Center as an international resource for litigation strategy and innovation.
She was previously the founding director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, a prosecutor and Deputy Chief of Appeals in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and a law clerk to the Honorable Alvin B. Rubin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She has taught human rights and constitutional law as an adjunct professor at NYU Law School and Columbia Law School and appears frequently in leading media and press. She is a graduate of Allendale Columbia School, Brown University and Columbia Law School, where she was a Kent Scholar and Managing Editor of the Columbia Law Review.
In addition to her many accomplishments beyond Rochester, N.Y., Nancy is committed to making a positive impact locally in Rochester. Nancy has been a loyal supporter of AC over the years and has renewed enthusiasm for the new strategic initiatives and diversity at AC. She and her husband are also generous supporters of Summer LEAP at AC. Recognizing the importance of sustaining such a critical and successful program in Rochester, she and her husband gave the first endowed gift in support of the AC Summer LEAP (Learning Enrichment to Achieve Potential).
Through her dedication to Summer LEAP, her numerous constitutional cases, and her building the field of women’s rights lawyers worldwide, Nancy literally embodies the mission of AC to demonstrate a sense of responsibility to self, the school community, and the society at large. As another nominator shared, “Nancy is more than an inspirational leader; she is a leader making a positive impact with her relentless attention to and passion for the rights of others.”
Nancy Northup ’77 will be honored at the 9th annual Allendale Columbia School Distinguished Alumni Award Luncheon held at the Country Club of Rochester on June 16, 2017, at 12:00 p.m. For more information about attending this luncheon, please contact the Alumni/Development Office at: 585.641.5230 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
