Kristin Cocquyt’s primary focus is to support, guide, and advise AC students on their college search and application process. She has been in the field of college admissions since 2004 and has visited more than 200 colleges, giving her a solid basis for recommending colleges that are great matches for our students. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hamilton College and completed the College Advising Program at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Kristin is a member of both the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling (NYSACAC) and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), in addition to the Association of College Counselors at Independent Schools (ACCIS).
What do you like most about your job?
Through my role, I have the opportunity to learn our students’ stories and help them highlight their strengths and unique experiences through the college application process. What I love about this work at AC is that our students are incredibly diverse and so are their experiences, strengths, intellectual interests, and goals. Our student talent runs deep, and their academic and extracurricular experiences at AC help them present compelling college applications.
What inspires you?
In order to stay current on college admission trends and to best support AC families, it’s important that I remain professionally active and engaged with fellow college counselors and college admission counselors. Each year I attend the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s annual conference where I am energized by the opportunity to share best practices and discuss hot topics in the college admission field with thousands of colleagues around the world.
Who is your biggest influence?
I have to thank my high school English teacher for leading me to select the college that was a stronger match for me than the colleges I was initially considering. She told me she would only write my letter of recommendation if I went to visit Hamilton College, so I heeded to her suggestion, and the rest is history! While I would never take that approach with a student I am advising through the college search and application process, I do make personalized college suggestions for each student at AC and encourage students to consider a broad range of colleges.
