Saturday, May 23rd
Sustainability – Different Ways to Grow Your Own Food

10:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Grades: K-5
Cost: FREE
Instructor: AC Lower School STEM Teacher, Mrs. Chaback

Did you know you can grow vegetables without soil? How about growing food from food? Children will put together a little in-home garden while learning about the life cycle of plants. You’ll be able to enjoy watching this grow for weeks to come!

Materials Needed:

  • Plastic water or 2-liter bottle
  • Scissors
  • Cotton balls
  • Water
  • Piece of cloth
  • Seeds (lettuce or salad mix seeds work the fastest, but other types of seeds will work)
  • Parent to assist

You Rock!

11:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Grades: K-5
Cost: FREE
Instructor: AC Third Grade Teacher, Mrs. Truong

Children will enjoy listening to the story “Ishi: Simple Tips From A Solid Friend” by Akiko Yabuki while painting pictures and messages on rocks to spread happiness to your family, friends, and neighbors. Kindness is contagious; let’s pass it on!

Materials Needed:

  • Clean, smooth rocks to paint
  • Acrylic paint or Posca paint marker pens
  • Paintbrush
  • A cup of water to clean your paintbrush
 

Saturday, May 30th
Sculpture Shenanigans

10:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Grades: K-5
Cost: FREE
Instructor: AC Art Teacher, Shari Ellmaker

Using an ordinary sheet of aluminum foil children will learn to create a person and then place that person in a fun space using glue, scissors, and construction paper. Sculptures can be added to colorful scenes like playgrounds, amusement parks, gardens, or any other place your imagination takes you!

Materials Needed:

  • Aluminum foil (about the size of 17″ x 11″ or close to that, does not need to be exact)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Construction paper of various colors

 

Saturday, May 30th
Vegetables: From Seed to Table

11:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Grades: All ages welcome
Cost: FREE
Instructor: AC Teacher, Gabe Costanzo

In this pop-up class, students will learn the basics of growing their own vegetables or flowers, with helpful advice that covers the life-cycle of annuals. I will demonstrate with my own materials from home, and students may complete the task with me or just follow along and take notes.

Materials Needed:

  • Seeds and/or seedlings (starts)
  • Garden bed OR pots and a growing medium
  • Water
  • Sunshine!

Experience a TED Circle – TEDxAllendaleColumbiaSchool

1:00 – 1:30 p.m.
Grades: Students entering 10th grade and up (and adults!)
Cost: FREE
Instructor: AC Teacher, Tony Tepedino and two AC students

TED Circles is an open platform of small groups that engage in conversations about ideas. The theme will be “Life at its fullest”. During a TED Circle, we will watch and discuss a TED Talk and then share takeaways online to consider each other’s perspectives and create a global conversation.
