Last Friday, December 13th, the Middle School ceramics class presented The Willow Center of Rochester with a donation of $1,368, which they raised at their fifth annual Empty Bowls event at Allendale Columbia School on November 26th. The class made a lot of ceramic bowls and worked with AC faculty and students to help them make items for the fundraiser. They also wrote letters asking local artists to donate items to the raffle.
Empty Bowls is a worldwide grassroots movement to fight hunger and provide items for basic needs. The Willow Center is a nonprofit organization in Rochester that offers a variety of services to families and children. The AC ceramics class was happy to donate all of the proceeds from the event, in the amount of $1,368, to the Willow Center.

Students in the Middle School Ceramics elective and the Upper School 3-D Art elective have been working diligently to create bowls to be auctioned off at our event next month. Each bowl is handmade by an Allendale Columbia student with a few very special bowls donated by local artists! The bowls will be available for purchase by silent auction with a raffle for one very special bowl to be revealed at our event!
The Middle School organizers chose Hillside Special Santas as their charity to donate proceeds to. Ciarra Franz (Class of 2021) explains, “we decided on this charity because we want to help kids our age to have a better holiday season.” Students will use the proceeds from this event to shop for items on a wish list provided by Hillside.
If you are interested in volunteering to help out with our event we created a sign up. We are looking for donations of bowls, spoons, and homemade soup. We will also need parent volunteers for the event. It is exciting to partner up with the closing of the Upper School Production of Little Shop of Horrors. We hope you can join us for the Empty Bowls event and stay for the musical!
