Kids do think ahead sometimes, especially when it comes to big transitions. Fifth-graders moving up to Middle School worry about the schedule, changing classrooms and teachers, lockers, and mixing with older kids. Eighth-graders moving to Upper School often cite preparing for college, tougher courses, more choices, and whether they can balance everything. Parents worry about these things, too, as they try to anticipate their child’s path forward. Imaginings of what might be often distracts them from the excitement of what’s to come.
The cure: trying it! Once students, with support, experience a day in the life at the next level and see what actually happens, the fears fade away. That’s why Allendale Columbia does a Next Steps program every February for fifth-graders and eighth-graders. (more…)

Parents of eighth-graders are invited to the Next Steps event for parents on Wednesday, February 6th. This event is designed to help answer any questions you may have and provide an outline of the opportunities that Upper School will offer your child. A key component to the evening will be presentations and question-and-answer sessions with students who have participated in various programs. We will also spend some time getting to know more about your student and what they need/want from Upper School. The event will begin in the Curtis Performance Center at 7:00 p.m. and should conclude around 8:00 p.m.
During the school day on February 6th, eighth-grade students visit the Upper School for their Next Steps program. Current eighth-graders get a taste of what it is like to be in the Upper School, as we want them to be excited about all the opportunities that we have to offer. They will spend time in classes, participate in panel discussions with current Upper School students, and get a chance to eat lunch with Upper School students and faculty. We will also speak with them about clubs, athletics, arts, and the advisory program.
Parents of fifth-graders are invited to a special Next Steps event on Wednesday, February 6th, to hear about the transition process, resources, and different ways we help make the transition a smooth one. The event will begin in the Curtis Performance Center at 7:00 p.m. and should conclude around 8:00 p.m.
During the school day on February 6th, fifth-grade students in the Middle School will go through their “Next Steps” program. Current fifth-graders get a taste of what it is like to be in Middle School, as we want them to be excited about all the opportunities that Middle School has to offer. They will spend time in Middle School classes, ask questions of Middle School students acting as ambassadors, and get a chance to eat family-style lunch with Middle School students and faculty. Ms. Duver will also speak with them about clubs, athletics, the Middle School play, and advisors. They will finish the visit with some fun activities, and, most importantly, get a taste of the culture that makes our Middle School a unique part of the AC community.
It’s February and already time to begin thinking about the next school year. Allendale Columbia students and parents transitioning from grade to grade in Lower School, from Lower School to Middle School and Middle School to Upper School have many questions about the changes they’ll experience, so AC’s Next Steps programs help address those questions and make the transitions easier.
Because of the close-knit community and smaller class sizes at AC, the transition from Lower School to Middle School isn’t as traumatic as it might be in larger schools, since many of the students and teachers know each other already. But there are still many changes, in addition to learning where things are in a different wing of the building and switching from being with one teacher most of the day to having different teachers and classrooms for each subject. After some introductory discussions with Head of Middle School Tina Duver and others, the Next Steps program paired sixth grade ambassadors with fifth grade students to guide them through a typical day’s routines, giving an introduction to teachers, classrooms, and schedules.
