Lower School PE “Walks” Across New York State!

Our Lower School students have been busy in Physical Education, walking across New York State! The students wore pedometers in class and recorded individual steps trying to walk far enough to make it across New York State. Through our “trip” across the state, we stopped at various attractions, learned exciting facts, and sampled some activities that happen in those cities.

Our trip started off in Rochester where we played hockey, and then we traveled the 61 miles (122,000 steps) to the Finger Lakes. Here we learned the names of all the Finger Lakes and how they were formed. From there we walked 254 miles (508,000 steps) to the Big Apple! The kids enjoyed learning all about the Brooklyn Bridge and were excited to travel to our state capital next. In Albany, we played an exciting game of Tower of Power and the kids were excited to build their cup tower as high as our capital building. From Albany, we made the 140 mile trek to the Adirondacks, and we enjoyed taking our pedometers outside and playing in the snow! Next we went to Cooperstown and enjoyed a baseball unit, while learning all about the Baseball Hall of Fame. We then traveled 93 miles (186,000 steps) to Syracuse and enjoyed learning some basic basketball skills. We finished our journey by traveling to Buffalo and the students loved going through a variety of football stations and practicing their field goal kicks, passing, and diving catches.

As a group we traveled a total of 1,926,317 steps, which is equivalent to 963 miles. We are thankful we had the opportunity to collaborate with Mrs. Gregor and the Lower School art classes to design and develop our New York State maps that were displayed in the PE hallway.
